October 9, 2004 - The Smell - Los Angeles, CA

We drove around the block about 5 times and couldn't find The Smell, visually or through the nose. When we did, we realized that we were so early the door had not yet opened. So we went to The Standard, a posh hotel with ambient music in the outdoor lobby not far away. There is supposed to be a great view of LA from the bar upstairs there. It was going to cost us each $20 to enter that bar, so we decided to hang out in the outdoor lobby instead for free. Drinks were expensive, but the price was worth the view from ground-level--all the skyscrapers above us, helicopters going by. Every woman but me was wearing high heels. We'd had the minivan parked by the valet since it had all our stuff in it (not sure if they took it to an actual garage or just parked it in the street though), and as we were waiting for the minivan to be returned to us after a few drinks, we saw the driver divert from the usual path of delivering the car to where people were standing in the drive (where many Mercedes Benz's and BMWs were). Instead, the driver pulled the minivan to the curb, even though it was obviously the coolest automobile there, the only one with relief on the hood.
The Smell does have an odor, though it's not one of the obviously awful ones. Its mystery waned as my nostrils adjusted and I forgot about it. The people who work there are super friendly and great. Bobb Bruno opened first, and he left a haunting and wonderful impression. The Electro Group went on next and delivered a strong wall of sound. We played after them, in front of the brick castle edifice, and it was a lot of fun. Laurel took pictures with her very little camera. I guess there's built-in reverb there with the bricks and the shape of the room. After us Connect the Dots came on and Susie danced the night away.
We tried to find Laurel at a party around 1:45, somewhere near the gates to Dodger Stadium, but we couldn't find a liquor store and then she called to say that the party had been broken up. A can of WD-40 exploded in Chris's drum case and I stepped in the invisible oil. Dianna and Tim left the doors open for us and had beer chilling in the fridge, so we hung out on the porch into the wee hours. Around 3 am I found a dead ant in my contact lens case.
Tim quit working at Eat Well about a month ago to teach art at CSUN, but since he's in with the people there, he was able to get us the long table out front where we ate with Tim, Dianna, Justin, Jamie, & Laurel. Breakfast burritos rule.
